Grolim is a 100% male hybrid and is suitable for the cultivation of white asparagus in both the moderate climate and a climate comparable with that in Southern Europe. Grolim is a perfect example of a ‘yield crop’. The exceptionally high stem weight strongly contributes to labour costs control. The variety is early and has an above average production.

Characteristics

  • Early in production;
  • Very high yield potential;
  • Stands out in stem thickness, providing a high crop yield as such;
  • Reliable quality.

Cultivation
Grolim thrives best on well drained, vigorous soils. Good results are achieved for both sand and clay soils. Areas with high levels of ground water or with a sensitivity to flooding are less suitable. Grolim produces optimally under warm and fertile conditions, in terms of kilos as well as quality. Grolim is excellently suitable for black/white foil coverage or the use of advancing covering foil. Years of practical experience have shown that the best results are achieved with a plant density of 5 – 8 plants per linear metre. Using Grolim, high plant density doesn’t necessarily lead to thin stems. In general, the sorting will only become more uniform, while the quality and quantity of the yield is enhanced. The recommended plant depth is 18 – 20 cm.

Product
Over 80% of the sorting of the product is above 16 mm. Grolim hardly shows any pink discolouration, grooves or bended stems and has a fine tip if proper foil management is applied.

Foliage
The open, raised crop structure is such that diseases cannot easily influence the crop. These properties make Grolim suitable for organic cultivation as well.
